Travel Log

After a very late start Wednesday, we finally hit the highway around 10:00 PM. I'll just say that several of us forgot items in various places in the valley. We were getting a little worried that we wouldn't make it to the construction before they closed the highway for the night. But we managed to get there 20 minutes before they closed it. After leaving the construction, I found a pullout (near sheep mtn) where we ended up spending the night.

We refueled in Glennallen and arrived in Tok for lunch. We ended up spending a few hours in Tok at the visitors' center and Mukluk Land. It gave the kids a chance to stretch out there legs and play some games. We've got pictures...but I don't have a USB cable with me, so I can't upload them yet. The weather was actually quite nice in Tok until we were heading out. As I was filling up the RV, the clouds started to let loose. The drive to Chicken, AK would be spent weaving through patches of rain.

As I topped of the tank in Chicken, Sheila informs me that the border closes at 8:00 PM...no big deal it's only 6:00...then she clarifies that it is Pacific time not Alaska time. Once again we are on a race to reach a point in the road before it closes. We pulled up at 5 minutes 'til closing time. I drove to the next rest area and parked us for the night.

We crossed the mighty Yukon on the ferry to Dawson at noon. We settled in to our campsite and then went on a walk to explore the cute little town. One could almost film an old western here with little worry about anachronisms popping up. The dirt roads have boardwalks next to them rather than paved sidewalks and all of the buildings look like they were stolen from a Hollywood set. Matthew didn't see the charm and started pitching a fit, so I returned to RV with him while the rest of the family went exploring.

We've played games, read, watched videos, and enjoyed each other's company. It's been wonderful. We hope to go gold panning while we are here and will be attending a parade tomorrow. Sheila has done a wonderful job of planning this vacation. I promise one of us will post the photos once we get a USB cable.
